RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector): Working Principle and its Applications

 Sensors are electronic devices used to measure various physical phenomena such as voltage, acceleration, current, etc. For instance, the hall effect is used to measure magnetic density, and the piezoelectric effect is used for measuring voltage and current. Similarly, RTD- Resistance Temperature Detector is a temperature detector sensor that is used to measure the temperature by the use of the relationship between the resistance and temperature of the conductor. This is widely used and rapidly replaces thermocouples.   

In most industrial applications, the temperature is the crucial parameter that needs to be constantly monitored. This is because the proper functioning of an application depends on the temperature. For this specific function, temperature sensors such as RTD are important.   



What is RTD - Resistance Temperature Detector sensor?  

It is a device that tracks the temperature of an application through the relationship between the resistance and temperature. As temperature changes, the resistance of the RTD- Resistance Temperature Detector sensor changes as well.   


The resistance v/s temperature relationship is defined as the resistance increasing as the temperature increases. This relative change in the resistance is called as Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (α), and this remains nearly constant throughout the temperature change of the sensor.

   

Platinum is the highly preferred material in the RDT sensors as it has a straight relationship between the temperature and the resistance and can be used at wide temperature ranges with accurate results. In addition to this, it features the chemical inertness property that makes it ideal to use in any environmental conditions.

  • The RTD sensor is used in automotive applications to measure the engine temperature, an oil level sensor, and intake air temperature sensors. In communication and instrumentation, it is used for sensing the over-temperature of amplifiers, transistor gain stabilizers, etc
